Secondary Pathways

Working together to nurture lifelong learners

KS3 Pine

INTENT

Pine offers a small group setting within Key Stage 3 at HHELC which allows for a steady and nurturing reintegration from home or 1:1, into a classroom environment. Our key objective is to help build confidence and support learning by using a mix of targeted intervention, English and maths at a primary level and topic based learning based on the children’s interests and relevant KS3 objectives. We aim for pupils to re-engage with school routines and learning, through a supportive and nurturing approach where individuals’ needs are tailored for, so that personal and academic progress can be developed and maintained.

IMPLEMENTATION

English is planned using objectives from the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum and includes a mix of reading, word and grammar interventions alongside text-based learning, regular opportunities for short burst writing and spelling lessons. In maths, we again take objectives from the National Curriculum (KS1-2) and make use of White Rose resources, a range of physical manipulatives, games and online platforms such as Times Table Rock Stars.

Science, ICT and PSHE are taught in discreet lessons with input from science specialist teachers. Humanities and creative arts are delivered through topic lessons based on the children’s interests and relevant KS3 objectives.

In all lessons, the focus is on building confidence and readiness to learn through creative, nurturing and flexible planning.

IMPACT

Our aim is that pupils in the Pine group enjoy coming to school and enjoy engaging with staff, other children and lessons in a positive way with appropriate learning behaviours. We aim for them to have developed their personal, social, emotional and academic skills, by experiencing and learning through a broad and balanced curriculum, tailored to their individual needs, enabling them to respond positively to new challenges and opportunities. We aim for our pupils to have the skills, independence and confidence: to communicate their learning and ideas in a variety of ways; to apply their knowledge in a range of situations and to make connections between new and existing knowledge. The skills and qualities our pupils develop, enable them to transition effectively onto their next educational destination.

The impact is measured through a number of monitoring activities:

Observations of learning and outcomes

Pupil voice

Parent/carer voice – parents’ evenings, reviews, testimonials

Attendance

IPTs – both academic and personal development

Review meetings including EHCP reviews if relevant

Book scrutiny/learning walks

Formative and summative assessments as appropriate

Progress conversations

Feedback from new provisions

Successful transition
